Beto Pallares

Beto holds a Ph.D. in International Business Strategy from the University of Texas at El Paso, in addition to an MBA. Beto started his career as a management consultant focused on the telecom industry. He’s also been a start-up entrepreneur, a telecom executive, and restauranteur, a nonprofit director, and a venture capitalist. Beto’s expertise is in seed and early stage venture investments, as well as venture fund creation. He joins InSite as a capital advisor to the fund and to the start-ups InSite supports.

Ebetuel "Beto" Pallares was born in Cd. Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico and raised in El Paso, TX. In 2006, he founded Joseph Advisory Services (JAS). He brings extensive domestic and international start-up experience as an entrepreneur and in conducting due diligence for both start-ups and late stage companies.

His professional experience spans working for top-tier strategy consulting firms, co-founding start-ups, international business development, nonprofit management, venture capital and military service. In the summer of 2009, he co-founded Cottonwood Capital Partners, and was the general partner of Cottonwood Technology Fund, a seed and early-stage venture fund with headquarters in El Paso, TX. Beto has a particular interest in seed and early-stage companies with emphasis in the material sciences, nanotechnology and biotech areas. He serves on the board of six companies, four of which are material sciences related and two are biotech/med device related. In addition, he is a board observer for several companies developing products and services in the material sciences and IT sectors.

Beto is also the investor-in-residence at New Mexico State University and for the Texas Tech University System. In this capacity he identifies sources of capital, best practices, and structuring investment opportunities for university-related technologies, as a means of developing vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystems. He also serves on the limited partnership advisory committees of several venture funds.

In addition to his venture activities, Beto is a Kauffman Fellow at the Center for Venture Education and a Cross Sector Leadership Fellow, at the Presidio Institute, an initiative of the Presidio Trust. Kauffman Fellows are selected from a worldwide pool of innovators and venture capitalist that share common goals and values that contribute to capital formation and venture development. Cross Sector Leadership Fellows are selected based on their ability to impact their communities and the nation in areas of managerial and collaborative excellence across sectors of society.

Beto graduated from Brandeis University, in Waltham, MA, with a degree in economics, and received his MBA from The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). He also went on to attain a Ph.D. in International Business from UTEP. His research has focused on the confluence of high tech emerging market firms, incubators and technology commercialization.

Beto is married, and enjoys fatherhood. When not watching his kids while his wife, a professional photographer, is on assignment, he engages in reading, writing and community service, including service in Rotary International and Gideons International.
